Big News for Short Films at HIFF 2016

oscars-2016Announcing a new perk for filmmakers of documentary shorts…

The HIFF 2016 Documentary Short Competition winner will now qualify for Academy Award® consideration without a standard theatrical run, joining the Narrative Short Competition film winner. (This is provided the film otherwise complies with the Academy rules.) In addition, both winning Narrative and Documentary Short Competition filmmakers will take home a cash prize.

In 2015, three of this year’s Academy Award nominees for Best Documentary Short* were screened at HIFF (CLAUDE LANZMANN: SPECTRES OF THE SHOAH, BODY TEAM 12, and LAST DAY OF FREEDOM). Last year also saw a record number of submissions for the Festival, and 36 Oscar nominations from films that played throughout all categories.

“We are honored to now have two of our award categories recognized by the Academy,” said Hamptons International Film Festival Program Director David Nugent. “Each year this Festival grows, making it even more exciting to see the wealth of talent and art it attracts.”

HIFF is proud of the many short films from past festivals that have gone onto further high-profile success. Other recent highlights include:
