Last Friday, Longtime HIFF Board member Linda Biscardi Fuller—who taught at East Hampton High School and Middle School for 35 years and has been instrumental in developing HIFF’s education programs—joined HIFF Jr. education and outreach manager Marissa Cangiolosi and headed east to Montauk School.

Seventy-seven lucky 4th- and 5th-graders were treated to the red carpet experience at a viewing of short films designed to encourage compassion for animals big, small, and sometimes furry. The screening was capped off by a post-screening Q&A session to reinforce the importance of dignity for all living beings.

The Compassion, Justice + Animal Rights program addresses the themes championed by the very caring Zelda Penzel and sponsored by the Moxie Foundation, whose mission it is to enrich communities and empower even the youngest of change makers, through the spirit of innovation.

HIFF Jr. programs are designed to bring students to the festival and to bring the festival to the students: year-round, HIFF Jr. is committed to reaching out to our community with collaborative programs in our schools, sponsorship of film clubs, summer filmmaking camps, and a college scholarship program for our local graduating seniors.

The Montauk students had terrific feedback following the films, asking great questions and continuing to consider the themes of the films through writing and classroom discussions. Thank you to the Montauk School for hosting us! We look forward to more in-school events throughout the year.
