Robert Altman’s 1971 deeply moving Western about love and the pursuit of wealth in early America. McCabe (Warren Beatty), a small-time gambler, and Mrs. Miller (Julie Christie), a madam, go into “business” together in the Pacific Northwest mining town of Presbyterian Church. When a large corporation wants to take over the town, McCabe must decide whether or not to sell. What will his decision mean for Mrs. Miller and the town?

An added bonus, McCabe & Mrs. Miller features spectacular cinematography by one of recent history’s best, Vilmos Zsigmond. Starting in the 1950s and working until his death last month, at age 85, Zsigmond was a force in the industry, lensing such classics as Close Encounters of the Third KindThe Deer HunterThe Long Goodbye, and many more. As Variety explained in his obituary, Zsigmond “considered it the ultimate compliment that no two of his movies looked alike.”

Also starring Rene Auberjonois, William Devane, and John Schuck.

If you’ve never seen this American classic (or never on the big screen), now’s your chance. Join us for our annual Winter Classic screening at Guild Hall of East Hampton, after which HIFF Co-Chair Alec Baldwin and Artistic Director David Nugent will discuss the film, its reputation, and the power of the late Vilmos Zsigmond‘s stunning cinematography.
