2021 Oscar® Winners

Updated April 26, 2021

It’s official! With NOMADLAND’s big win at last night’s Oscars ceremony, HIFF has shown the Best Picture winner for 11 years in a row. Congratulations also go out to Chloé Zhao, the first woman of color and 2nd woman ever to win the Best Directing Award, and to Frances McDormand for her third Best Actress win.

Other winning films from last year’s Festival include THE FATHER (Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor), SOUND OF METAL (Best Sound and Best Film Editing), and MINARI (Best Supporting Actress).

Congratulations to all the winners!

HIFF28 films scored big with the 2021 Oscar® nominations, garnering 30 nods, including four Best Picture nominations:

Of note, Chloé Zhao became the first woman of color to receive a Best Director nomination (for NOMADLAND), and Steven Yeun is the first Asian-American actor to receive a Best Actor nomination (for MINARI). HIFF28 audiences were among the first to see several of this year’s nominees: SOUND OF METAL, MINARI and COLLECTIVE were all HIFF28 East Coast Premieres.

We were thrilled to welcome a bevy of this year’s nominees to post-screening Q&As at HIFF28:

Best Picture nominee SOUND OF METAL also earned a Best Original Screenplay nomination for writer/director Darius Marder, and Best Actor for star Riz Ahmed. Other nods include Best Supporting Actor (Paul Raci), Best Sound, and Best Editing.

Writer/director Lee Isaac Chung, received two nominations—Best Director and Best Original Screenplay—for the Best Picture nominee MINARI, which also received nominations for Best Actor (Steven Yeun), Best Supporting Actress (Youn Yuh-Jung), and Best Original Score.

HIFF28 Best Documentary COLLECTIVE received two nominations—for Best Documentary Feature and Best International Feature—Romania’s first-ever nods from The Academy. Director Alexander Nanau talked with 2020 Oscar nominee Petra Costa.
