The 2019 Oscar® nominations were announced this week, including 44 nods for films that screened at #HIFF2018.
HIFF standouts THE FAVOURITE and ROMA lead the pack with ten nominations apiece. We were pleased to welcome guests from both films at HIFF 2018, including ROMA producer Gabriela Rodriguez, who is the woman from a Latin American country to receive a Best Picture nomination (which goes to the film’s producers).

All five films in the Best Foreign Language Film category—SHOPLIFTERS, NEVER LOOK AWAY, CAPERNAUM (US Premiere), COLD WAR, and ROMA—screened with HIFF last fall, the first time for such a clean sweep of the category.
CAPERNAUM, directed by Nadine Labaki (our guest at HIFF 2018), is only the second film from Lebanon to be nominated in this category, following last year’s entry, THE INSULT.
Three time Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell, who was our guest at the HIFF 2018 Friday Centerpiece screening of THE FAVOURITE, is a double nominee this year, for her sumptuous work in both Yorgos Lanthimos’s frontrunner and MARY POPPINS RETURNS.
Three short films that screened at HIFF are nominated this year, including one from each of the categories: FAUVE (directed by Jeremy Comte) is competing for Best Live-Action Short, ONE SMALL STEP (directed by Andrew Chesworth + Bobby Pontillas) is in the running for Best Animated Short, and LIFEBOAT (directed by Skye Fitzgerald) is a nominee for Best Documentary Short. You may recall that ONE SMALL STEP was also our Audience Award winner at HIFF 2018!
Remember: you can see all the nominated short films this February in East Hampton! Join us February 9, 10, 16 + 17 at Guild Hall…
Congratulations to *all* the nominees! The 91st Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, February 24.
