You’re Invited: Screenplay Reading

Bullheaded, stoic, and scrappy, 17-year-old Mickey Peck lives a codependent existence with her charming, volatile father Hank. But when she falls for Wyatt, a confident newcomer with plans to move to San Francisco, Mickey realizes she wants to leave too. MICKEY AND THE BEAR tells the heartbreaking story of a teenage girl’s emancipation from her father, set against the backdrop of Anaconda, Montana.

Annabelle Attanasio was selected to receive the 2017 Melissa Mathison Fund, established in 2016 and named for the late Hollywood screenwriter of iconic films such as E.T. THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL. The Fund ​supports HIFF’s annual Screenwriters Lab, and in particular, is instrumental in ensuring that female voices are showcased.​ ​This reading is a direct result of receiving this fund, and will take Annabelle one step further to getting her film made.

luke kirbyLUKE KIRBY: HANK. Luke Kirby just wrapped shooting M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming feature GLASS, along with Anya Taylor-Joy, James McAvoy, Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson. He can recently be seen in Dreamworks’ A DOG’S PURPOSE, directed by Lasse Hallstrom. Other feature credits include Paul Dalio’s TOUCHED WITH FIRE, in which he stars opposite Katie Holmes. Luke can currently be seen recurring on Amazon’s new series, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Luke played the series regular role of Jon Stern in Rectify for Sundance Channel, alongside Aden Young, Abigail Spencer, and J Smith-Cameron. Other film and TV credits include TAKE THIS WALTZ (Dir. Sarah Polley, Magnolia Pictures); THE GREATEST GAME EVER PLAYED (Dir. Bill Paxton, Walt Disney Studios); Astronaut Wives Club, (ABC); The Good Wife (CBS); Show Me a Hero (HBO). Luke was born in Ontario and studied at the National Theatre School of Canada. One of his first big breaks came in the form of a major role working for director David Yates in CBC’s miniseries Sex Traffic. Luke is a dual-citizen of both the United States and Canada. He currently lives in Brooklyn.

Annabelle AttanasioANNABELLE ATTANASIO: WRITER/DIRECTOR. Annabelle Attanasio ​is a ​Los Angeles native​,​ wayward feminist, ​and award-winning, Brooklyn-based filmmaker. Her feature MICKEY AND THE BEAR won the Melissa Mathison Fund at the HIFF Screenwriters Lab and is currently supported by Film Independent and IFP. She plans to shoot MICKEY in the Summer 2018. Her short, FRANKIE KEEPS TALKING, has played festivals nationwide, including Palm Springs, Hamptons, Austin, Mill Valley, and Maryland, and won several awards, including Best Female Protagonist at NFFTY. As an actress, she has previously recurred in Steven Soderbergh’s The Knick (Cinemax) and currently stars in Bull (CBS) as sardonic hacker Cable McCrory. She loves big eyebrows, St. Vincent, Nan Goldin, Andrea Arnold, and the song Work From Home by Fifth Harmony. She is repped by ​queen Rhonda Price of Gersh.

amy devra gossels AMY DEVRA GOSSELS: CASTING DIRECTOR.
Shortly after graduating Magna Cum Laude from Brown University, Amy Gossels began working as a producer and casting director in New York and subsequently launched her company, Amy Gossels Casting. In addition to casting principals for more than 1500 commercials and branded content pieces, including many CLIO winners, Ms. Gossels has cast more than 100 film and television projects during her 20+ years in the industry. Ms. Gossels has also served as a producer for more than 20 of her film projects. Notable feature film credits include SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVE starring Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton and Godfrey Reggio’s VISITORS. Lizzie ShapiroLIZZIE SHAPIRO: PRODUCER. Lizzie Shapiro is a freelance producer in Brooklyn, NY. She has produced several short films that have premiered at film festivals worldwide, including FRANKIE KEEPS TALKING (Palm Springs International Shortsfest 2017, Hamptons International Film Festival 2017), WHERE THERE’S SMOKE (Tribeca Film Festival 2017, Edmonton Grand Jury Winner 2017), and JAHAR (Tribeca Film Festival 2016). Lizzie was recently the Unit Production Manager for Peter Brunner’s TO THE NIGHT and the Production Coordinator for Matthew Porterfield’s SOLLERS POINT. Lizzie also worked on the feature film GOAT (Sundance 2016) as the NY Production Supervisor and Post Supervisor. She recently line produced the summer portion of Omni Boat in Miami, FL with Borscht Corp. She has produced commercial content with companies such as Yacht Club Films, M ss ng P eces, Anonymous Content, All-Expanded, EPOCH, Venables Bell, The Barbarian Group, Alldayeveryday and VICE i-D. Lizzie has also produced a number of music videos for artists such as Alicia Keys, Lil Yachty/Young Thug, Maggie Rogers, Pusha T and Norah Jones.


The HIFF annual Screenwriters Lab, celebrating 18 years, pairs emerging screenwriters with established screenwriters, directors and producers for a collaborative weekend of one-on-one mentoring sessions each spring in the Hamptons. Submissions are now open for the 2018 edition.
