AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL 50th ANNIVERSARY PANEL DISCUSSION: THE LEGACY OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT

10/15 2:00 PM First Presbyterian Church Session House, East Hampton

For 50 years, the Amnesty International global community has worked to end grave human rights abuses around the world. Amnesty’s vision is for every person to enjoy all the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and other international human rights standards. On the occasion of this important anniversary, the Hamptons International Film Festival looks at the 50-year legacy of the American Civil Rights Movement as witnessed by three feature films in our 2011 program: SING YOUR SONG, THE LOVING STORY, and ALL ME: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF WINFRED REMBERT. Join the filmmakers and representatives of Amnesty for an in-depth discussion of films about Americans who worked tirelessly for human dignity and equality during the ’50s and ’60s.

NANCY BUIRSKI (THE LOVING STORY) is the Founder and former Director of the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, based in Durham, NC. She served as the Executive Producer of Pangea Day Film Content, and was also the Producer of ALTHEA (Dir: Rex Miller), HARLEM WOODSTOCK (Dir: Alex Gibney), and TIME PIECE, an innovative cross-cultural omnibus documentary combining stories of Turkish and American filmmakers. Following THE LOVING STORY, Buirski is directing TANAQUIL LE CLERCQ: AFTERNOON OF A FAUN. Prior to her work in film, she was a documentary photographer, writing and photographing EARTH ANGELS MIGRANT CHILDREN IN AMERICA, and the Foreign Picture Editor at The New York Times.

VIVIAN DUCAT (ALL ME: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF WINFRED REMBERT), a native New Yorker, has directed, produced and written more than 20 long-format documentaries for broadcast. She spent the first part of her career in London, directing films for the BBC including THE STORY OF ENGLISH, THE PRIZE: THE EPIC QUEST FOR OIL, MONEY, AND POWER, and LOCOMOTION. After returning to New York, Ducat produced programs including THE AIDS QUARTERLY WITH PETER JENNINGS, the ABC News series THE CENTURY, and the WGBH series THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE. Recently, Ducat has directed and produced interactive media and short films for institutions including The Library of Congress and the New York Historical Society. ALL ME: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF WINFRED REMBERT is her first feature-length documentary.

JOAN LIBBY HAWKE (AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL) has been involved in supporting human rights and women’s rights throughout her career. President of Libby Hawk and Associates and a liaison to Demand Dignity, she has worked with international nongovernmental and governmental organizations. Her involvement with Amnesty International and Amnesty USA includes designing and curating the Cambodia Witness exhibit to highlight extrajudicial execution that traveled throughout the US and Europe. WINFRED REMBERT (ALL ME: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF WINFRED REMBERT) grew up in Cuthbert, Georgia. Given away at birth to a great aunt, Rembert spent much of his childhood as a field worker in cotton and peanut fields. After attending a civil rights demonstration, he was thrown in jail without charges or trial. An escape over a year later resulted in a prison sentence, but only after Rembert had survived an attempted lynching. While serving seven years on Georgia chain gangs, he fell in love with his future wife, as well as with leather as an art medium. Most of his colorful art depicts scenes and themes from African American life in segregated Cuthbert, GA and his time spent on chain gangs. His work has been exhibited at the Yale University Art Gallery and the Adelson Galleries in association with Peter Tillou Works of Art. Rembert and his family still live in New Haven’s inner city.
