Alfred P. Sloan Foundation
The Hamptons International Film Festival was the first film festival to partner with Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to give an annual cash prize to a film that features a realistic and compelling portrayal of science and technology. The Hamptons/Sloan Feature Film Prize comes from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation’s program in public understanding of science, and forms part of a broader effort to stimulate leading artists in film, television, and theater to create more credible works about science and technology.

THE ALFRED. P SLOAN FEATURE FILM PRIZE, FILM SCREENING AND DISCUSSION
Each year, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Hamptons International Film Festival partner to present a cash prize to a director whose film features science, technology, and scientists at work in realistic and compelling ways. The Sloan Foundation and HIFF are proud to present the 2011 Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize to co-directors Annie Howell and Lisa Robinson for their film, SMALL BEAUTIFULLY MOVING PARTS. In this charming comedy, a pregnant “freelance technologist,” Sarah Sparks, questions her readiness to become a parent. Passionate about gadgetry, technology, and mechanical problems, Sarah is at a loss when faced with questions lacking an empirical solution.
“For it’s original and fresh approach to character, story and theme - including the idea that technology may reveal our deepest selves and express our ambivalent human need for connection as much as control - the HIFF 2011 Sloan Feature Film Prize goes to SMALL, BEAUTIFULLY MOVING PARTS, a poignant comedy about a young woman seeking her absent mother as she copes with the onset of motherhood.” - Doron Weber, The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation
Immediately following the screening of the film on Friday, October 14 at 5 PM, the directors and special guests convened for a compelling discussion about the intersection between creativity, relationships, and technology.
Two outstanding science and technology-themed screenplays from the festival’s annual screenwriter’s lab will be performed as staged readings at this exciting and not to miss event. This year’s winning screenplays are =”(Equals”), by Sheryl Glubok and Newton’s Laws of Emotion, by Eugene Ramos. Jay Anania (Day on Fire, Her Name Is Carla) will direct a selection from each screenplay, which will be performed by a cast of special guest actors selected by Amy Devra Gossels, CSA.
