Now entering its 21st year, HIFF continues to thrive as a prestigious forum for independent and international film and is an Academy Award-qualifying festival for short live-action and animated films. The Festival is held for five days in early October in venues stretching along Long Island’s East End, and attracts roughly 15,000 visitors annually. The Festival hosts three competitions focused specifically on early-career filmmakers, in the hopes of bolstering their work at an important juncture and helping develop a discussion around their films, both within the film community and beyond.

Films in the 2012 festival received 32 Oscar & 22 Golden Globe nominations, both record numbers for HIFF. These films included 3 Best Picture nominees, matching the Festival’s record total from 2010. The Festival also screened a record 4 of the 5 Oscar Foreign Language nominees, 2 of the Best Documentary nominees, and a record 6 short film nominees. 2012 was also the 3rd year in a row that the Festival’s Audience Award winning film was nominated for Best Picture, with the last year’s THE ARTIST and THE KING’S SPEECH eventually taking home the honors.

Recent guests of the Festival included many high-level industry members with the following company’s executives represented: The Weinstein Company (Co-Chairman), Sony Pictures Classics (Co- President), Paramount (SVP of Publicity), Pixar (Director of Worldwide Publicity), Fox Searchlight (SVP of Publicity), Magnolia (President & VP of Acquisitions), Disney (Vice President of East Coast Publicity), IFC Films (Director of Acquisitions), Kino, Cinetic, Film Forum, Paladin, Film Movement, Cavu, and many others.
